MRI Salary 

MRI technologists are specially trained radiologists that work with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners and follow orders from physicians regarding the scan.  These technologists are responsible for monitoring the safety and comfort of MRI patients. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist Salary is determined by many factors.  Their pay may vary from setting to setting. For the most part, a MRI Technologist maintains and operates Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners.  They do images that have been ordered by physicians. Additionally, some MRI technologists may administer a special contrast called, gadolinium.  This contrast dosage is injected intravenously into the patients.   

Highest and Lowest MRI Technologist Salary

The median annual wage for radiologic technologists was $54,620. The median wage is fconsidered the average wage at which at least half of the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $37,060, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $77,160.

The median annual wage for MRI technologists is $65,360. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $46,400, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $89,130.

Most radiologic and MRI technologists work full time. Because imaging is needed in emergency situations, some technologists work evenings, weekends, or on call.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there are over 229, 300 in the US. This includes radiologists and MRI technologists.  This field is projected to grow faster than any other occupation over the next few years. 

Where They Work

MRI technologists work in diagnostic imaging centers, hospitals and other health care facilities. They may also provide moblie services or work in facilities as an independent contractor.  


Most MRI technologists work for some type of medical facility or business. Their benefit packages are determined by their employer and most often include, insurance and retirement benefits.  More often than not, their benefit package is a part of their overall contract as an employee.

UK (1)

·         The range of starting salaries for newly qualified radiographers starts at band 5 on the National Health Service (NHS) Agenda for Change (AfC) Pay Rates : £21,176-£27,625.

·         Range of senior radiographer salaries, band 6: £25,528-£34,189.

·         Range of lead or advanced practice grades, band 7: £30,460-£40,157.

·         Service managers or consultant radiographers can earn up to £67,134, Band 8c.

·         Working hours are 37.5 hours a week but the service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Shifts, weekends, bank holidays, nights and on-call working are required. Enhanced pay is sometimes offered for out of normal hours work.

·         About 90% of radiographers are employed by the NHS (see NHS Careers ). The ratio of diagnostic to therapeutic radiographers is around ten to one.

·         Part-time work and job share opportunities are available.


Canada (2)

Most full time MRI technicians in Canada will earn between $65,000 and $75,000 a year.  For the most part, employment prospects for this occupation are very good.  The government forecasts that an aging population and the arrival of new medical technologies and techniques, as well as the introduction of more advanced equipment, will require more technologists in the near future.

According to the latest figures, the highest hourly average wages are earned in Edmonton, Alberta at $44.89 per hour and the lowest average wages are earned in Montreal, Quebec at $23 per hour.

The average salary for a Medical Imaging Professional is $75,000 a year with the starting salary at $52, 000 and the senior salary at $105,000.  These wages are based on education, skills, experience and employers.  The worker in this profession works an average of forty hours a week.  As of November 2013 approximately 14,500 worked as Medical Imagining Specialist.  

The top three regions in Australia for Medical Imaging Professionals are NSW 32.1%, VIC 27% and QLD 21.9%.
