Private Practice vs. Employment

Most Chiropractors are considered to be self employed.  This means that they typically run a small business employing from 1 to 5 employees.

Employment Data

According to the US Department of Labor nationally there are approximately 28,000 chiropractors practicing in the U.S. with the majority of them working in an office or clinic setting.

Where They Work

Of all the chiropractors employed in the United States over 26,000 of them work in an office or clinic. This is also where the best chiropractic salaries can be found.  A small number of chiropractors earn a salary by being employed in chiropractic colleges and universities and earn an annual mean salary of $92,000.

Benefits

Fringe benefits are going to be similar to those offered by small businesses or single proprietor businesses. A typical employment benefits package is worth over $20,000 per year.

Most Chiropractors run a small medical practice and may employ from one to five employees.  Self funded benefits packages may include 401K, vacation, short term disability, and healthcare benefits.

UK[1]

In the UK, the newly qualified practitioners who typically work as self-employed associates in private practices are often paid a percentage of the fees that they generate for the practice, along with a small retainer while their client list increases.

For Chiropractors, typical starting salary is around £20,000 per annum. With experience, this can rise to £40,000. Chiropractic clinics typically charge patients an hourly rate of between £25 and £60 per session.

Salaries in the region of £50,000 - £70,000 per annum are not uncommon for senior self-employed practitioners. Chiropractors generally work a nine to five day. However, hours of work must suit clients and many practices will open earlier in the morning, in the evening and/or at weekends. While occasional emergency appointments may be necessary, this is unlikely to be a regular feature.

Opportunities exist throughout the UK, with practices in both urban and rural areas. Internationally agreed standards of education mean the majority of UK chiropractic qualifications are recognized overseas.

Australia[2]

Canada[3]

To work in this occupation, candidates must have a doctor of chiropractic. Only the University of Quebec at Trois Rivières (UQTR) offers this five-year program in Quebec. The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto is the only Canadian institution to offer this program in English. Membership in theOrdre des chiropraticiens du Québec is mandatory to work in this occupation and to use the title of chiropractor or doctor of chiropractic.

The annual employment income for people in this occupation who did not work full-time and full-year in 2005 was almost the same as those who worked full-time and full-year (just over $58,000 in both cases). They often start their career with a limited clientele and income. It generally takes a few years to build up an adequate client base, often by word of mouth, either alone or with associates. Evening and weekend work is quite common.
