Private Practice vs. Employment

Anaesthesiologists in private practice earned a median salary of approximately $280,000 per year. There is a large discrepancy between the reported earnings of anesthesiologists who are employed vs. private practice or self-employed with the top earnings listed by the US Bureau of labor statistics as being  more than $208,000 per year. Other sites report $400,000 or more per year.

United Kingdom - Anaesthesiologist

Median Salary

The median salary in the United Kingdom is £86,949 per year. The lower 10% earn £48,649.  The upper 10% earn more than £190,000 per year.

As a junior hospital trainee, the basic starting salary is £25,000. This increases in the second year of foundation training. For a doctor in specialist training the basic starting salary is slightly more than that of a second year "intern".   

Doctors in training are paid extra if they work more than 40 hours or they work outside the hours of 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Consultants can earn more than the average depending on the years of experience they have.

Consultants working in private sector hospitals may receive higher fees.

Canada – Anaesthesiologist

Most anaesthesiologists are employed by hospitals. A few are employed by private clinics and pain treatment centres. They are either paid set yearly salaries or they are paid by contract, which means that they are employed for a fixed amount of time -for example six months- and for a fixed amount of money.
