Anesthesiologist work in a number of settings including hospitals, clinics and schools, and therefore the wages vary depending on the location and the setting. Private Practice vs. Employment

Anaesthesiologists in private practice earned a median salary of approximately $260,000 per year. There is a large discrepancy between the reported earnings of anaesthesiologists who are employed vs. private practice or self-employed with the top earnings listed by the US Bureau of labor statistics as being approximately $245,000 per year. Other sites report $400,000 or more per year.

According to the US Department of Labor nationally there are 29,930 Anaesthesiologists who earn a salary through being employed. This is just over 6000 less than reported in 2009. The American Society of Anaesthesiologists lists more than 50,000 members. International Salary

UK - Anaesthesiologist[1]

As a junior hospital trainee, the basic starting salary is £22,636. This increases in the second year of foundation training to £28,076. For a doctor in specialist training the basic starting salary is £30,002.

Doctors in training are paid extra if they work more than 40 hours or they work outside the hours of 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Doctors in the speciality doctor grade earn between £37,176 and £69,325.

Consultants can earn a basic salary of between £75,249 and £101,451 per year, dependent on length of service.

Consultants working in private sector hospitals may receive higher fees.

Canada – Anaesthesiologist[2]

Most anaesthesiologists are employed by hospitals. A few are employed by private clinics and pain treatment centres. They are either paid set yearly salaries or they are paid by contract, which means that they are employed for a fixed amount of time -for example six months- and for a fixed amount of money.

Those employed on a salaried basis usually earn between $100,000 and $200,000 a year, depending on the number of patients they see. Experienced anaesthesiologists can earn up to $230,000 a year or more.

Incomes also vary according to the number of years an anaesthesiologist has practiced, the geographical location of the practice, the number of hours worked each week, and the skill of the surgeon.

In Australia and New Zealand, anaesthetists are physicians who deliver direct medical care (anaesthesia) to patients needing general or local anaesthesia for surgery and related procedures.

Senior salary: $215,000 annually

Average salary: $165,000 annually
